Heavy Debris
Concrete and Heavy Debris Dumpsters in Sarasota, FL
Driveways, paver drives, pool decks, lanai slabs, terrazzo, block and spalling concrete. This material is priced and hauled by weight, not by how full the box looks, and the right box is always a small one.
Concrete is the one material where volume stops being the useful measure. Broken slab runs roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard depending on thickness, aggregate and how wet it is, which means a container full of it weighs several times what the same box of household debris weighs. Every decision on a concrete job — box size, fill line, swap count, truck route — comes back to legal haul weight. Get that wrong and the load cannot leave your driveway, which helps nobody.
Around Sarasota the heavy streams are consistent. Driveways and paver drives, patios, pool decks and lanai slabs, walkways and porch steps. Terrazzo, which is heavier than almost anyone expects once it is broken out. Concrete block and stucco from wall removals. Spalling concrete chipped out of condo balconies and walkways under milestone and SIRS repair, which is a genuine, sustained stream in this market. Dock and seawall demolition, where broken cap and treated pilings come out together. Sand, fill and soil from grading. See the southwest Florida disposal guide for how these separate.
Separation is worth real money on the disposal side, so it is worth doing. Clean concrete — slab, block, pavers, brick, terrazzo with no attached wood, no plastic, no soil and no trash — can be crushed and reused as fill and road base. Once dirt, rebar tails, roots or general demolition debris go in with it, the load is dirty and it routes differently. Rebar cast inside the slab is normally fine; loose rebar and mesh are not. Keep two containers if the job produces both, and see mixed demolition service for the rest.
Heavy Material We Take In Sarasota
Driveway And Paver Removal
Broken concrete drive, or pavers and the sand bed under them. Pavers load neatly and stack dense, so the fill line comes up early and the box closes on weight fast.
Pool Deck And Lanai Slab
Deck slab, cool-deck coating, footings and the slab under a screen cage. Common work here, and reinforced sections come out in heavy pieces that need loading low and level.
Terrazzo Tear-Out
Denser than people expect. Terrazzo over slab breaks into thick, heavy pieces, and in a mid-century house it is worth asking a restoration contractor whether it can be polished instead.
Block And Stucco
Concrete block wall removal, stucco scratch and brown coat, and lintels. Heavy, dusty and awkward, and the wire lath in the stucco should be pulled out where it can be.
Spalling Concrete Repair
Balcony edges, railing posts, walkway sections and column faces chipped out under condo milestone and SIRS work. Small volumes, extreme weight, and repeat swaps across a long programme.
Dock And Seawall Demolition
Broken cap and panel, concrete pilings, treated timber and marine hardware. Wet material weighs more, and waterfront access usually dictates a smaller box than the volume suggests.
Walkways, Steps And Footings
Sidewalk sections, porch steps, mow strips and old footings. Small jobs individually, but a few yards of six-inch walkway will fill a small box to its weight limit quickly.
Sand, Fill And Soil
Excavated sand, fill and topsoil from grading, pool removal or drainage work. Wet soil is one of the heaviest things we haul, so these loads are kept shallow on purpose.
Why Concrete Always Gets The Small Box
A 10 yard is the workhorse for clean concrete, and it will reach its legal haul weight with only a shallow layer of broken slab in the bottom. That is not the box being small, it is physics. For larger tear-outs the answer is not a bigger container, it is more swaps — we drop, you fill to the marked line, we pull and return, and the job moves steadily. A 15 yard works for lighter mixed heavy debris such as block and stucco with framing attached. A 20 yard is about as far as we will go, and only when the material is genuinely mixed. A 40 yard is always the wrong answer for concrete: it hits weight at a fraction of its capacity and cannot legally be moved.

Keep clean concrete clean. Slab, block, pavers, brick and terrazzo with no soil, wood, plastic, roots or trash mixed in gets crushed and reused as fill and base, and that is the best outcome for everyone. One bag of general debris turns the whole load dirty. Cast-in rebar is fine, loose mesh and rebar tails are not. On placement, concrete work is where ground conditions bite: sandy soil, a high water table and a wet week will let a loaded truck sink, so protection boards go down on every set and we will refuse a soft spot rather than leave you with ruts and a stuck truck. Call Sunshine 811 before breaking any slab, and see the driveway protection guide for surfaces.

Concrete & Heavy Debris FAQs
Why can I only fill the concrete dumpster part way?
Because weight, not space, is the binding limit. Broken concrete runs roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, so a small box reaches the legal haul weight for the truck and the road with only a shallow layer in the bottom. Overloaded axles are a safety issue and a legal one, and Florida DOT sets those limits. We mark a fill line on delivery. Fill to it, call for the swap, and the job keeps moving.
What counts as a clean concrete load?
Concrete slab, block, pavers, brick and terrazzo with nothing else in it — no soil, no wood, no plastic, no roots, no insulation, no general trash. Rebar cast inside the concrete is normally acceptable; loose rebar, wire mesh and remesh usually are not. Clean loads get crushed for fill and road base, which is the whole point of separating them. Mixed loads route elsewhere. Tell us honestly what is going in and we will set up the right containers.
Can you handle spalling concrete from a condo balcony repair?
Yes, and it is regular work here. Milestone inspections and structural integrity reserve studies have pushed a lot of balcony, railing and walkway repair across Sarasota, Longboat Key, Siesta Key and downtown. The volumes are small but extremely dense, so we use a small box and swap it on the contractor's schedule. Placement needs association approval and a clear fire lane. These requirements have been amended repeatedly, so confirm the current obligations with your attorney and engineer.
Is terrazzo really that heavy?
Heavier than almost everyone guesses. It is a cement or epoxy matrix packed with marble and stone chips over a structural slab, and when it comes out it breaks into thick, dense pieces that stack tight in a container. It fills a small box on weight quickly. Before you demolish it, get an opinion: in a mid-century Sarasota house, original terrazzo can often be ground and polished back to something better than whatever was going to replace it.
Can I mix dirt and sand in with the concrete?
Not if you want the load treated as clean. Soil, sand and fill are heavy in their own right and wet soil is one of the heaviest materials we haul, so those loads run in a separate small box kept deliberately shallow. Mixing soil into broken concrete makes the whole thing a dirty load and closes off the crushing and reuse route. Two boxes cost you a little coordination and save a lot of aggravation at the scale.
